Một trong những cách tốt nhất để xây dựng vốn từ của bản thân, tăng tốc độ đọc và khả năng hiểu văn bản đó là học từ vựng thông qua ngữ cảnh. Tức là thông qua ngữ cảnh mà ta hiểu được nội dung câu văn, từ đó đoán được nghĩa của từ mới mà không cần ngay lập tức tra từ điển.

Đoán nghĩa từ trong ngữ cảnh cụ thể đồng nghĩa với việc ít cần tra từ điển hơn. Khi ta đọc, nếu cứ mỗi lần gặp từ mới lại mở từ điển ra thì sẽ tốn thời gian hơn, và có thể quên nội dung đang đọc cũng như không ghi nhớ được từ mới đó. Ngoài ra, tiếng Anh có nhiều từ đa nghĩa. Bạn hãy cố gắng đoán nghĩa từ bằng các gợi ý có ngay trong bài. Hãy ghi chú lại các từ mới đó và tra từ điển khi đã đọc xong ít nhất 1- 2 trang, để xem mình có đoán đúng không. Nếu khi bài đọc quá rối rắm, khó hiểu, thì hẳn nhiên ta luôn cần đến sự giúp đỡ của cuốn từ điển.

Có nhiều cách để ta xây dựng vốn từ mà không cần phụ thuộc vào từ điển. Bài hôm nay sẽ giới thiệu cách học từ vựng qua ngữ cảnh.

1. Xác định vai trò của từ

Trước khi đoán nghĩa từ, ta cần biết từ đó giữ vai trò gì trong câu. Đây có phải động từ diễn tả hành động? Hay là danh từ chỉ một vật hay một người nào đó? Hay là tính từ miêu tả sự vật, sự việc? Hay trạng từ bổ nghĩa cho động từ? Bạn có thể vận dụng kiến thức về gốc từ, đặc biệt là hậu tố để đoán vai trò.

6. Xác định gốc từ, tiền tố, hậu tố

Khi nhận ra được một gốc từ trong từ mới mà bạn chưa biết, bạn đã có thêm khả năng để đoán được nghĩa của từ. Hầu hết các trường hợp đều đúng khi bạn biết nghĩa của gốc từ trong tiếng Latin và Hy Lạp và đoán nghĩa từ đang gặp. Tiền tố thường làm thay đổi nghĩa của từ, còn hậu tố- không chỉ mang dấu hiệu về ngữ pháp mà còn mang thêm nghĩa của chính hậu tố ấy.

6. Xác định họ từ

Họ từ được hiểu là những từ có nghĩa tương tự nhau nhưng chức năng ngữ pháp khác nhau. Có một số ngoại lệ đó là những danh từ và động từ có cùng cách viết nhưng nghĩa của từ và cách đọc khác nhau. Ví dụ, danh từ present có nghĩa món quà, nhưng động từ present có nghĩa trình bày, và cách phát âm của hai từ cũng khác nhau.
